Spanish Wells is predominantly a fishing village. It is referred to as the fishing capital of the Bahamas. The waters surrounding Spanish Wells are abundant with marine life. The main catch harvested  is the Bahamian lobster, or crawfish as it is referred to by the islanders.

Spanish Wells was initially settled by British loyalists in the late 18th century. These settlers arrived from the American colonies, seeking refuge after the American Revolutionary War. The island was named after the Spanish explorers who first visited the area.

 On Spanish Wells there isn't a resort in sight. The island is so small the homes don't even have addresses! There are vacation home rentals of all sizes throughout the island. All the beaches are public, and the friendly neighborhood vibe makes you feel right at home. Golf Carts or Buggy's, are the main source of transportation around Spanish Well's and Russell Island. Much like the British, they drive on the left side of the road. The Island has various food markets, restaurants, food stands, private dining, and to-go catering available during your stay.
